December Grads Celebrate Commencement

While many people were celebrating the holiday season, a combined class of 113 Trinity students was also celebrating Commencement on December 15, 2007.

The ceremony marked the graduation of 44 traditional baccalaureate students and 69 adult studies students.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Virginia La Grand, professor of English at the College. Her address “no crystal stair,” based on the Langston Hughes poem “Mother to Son,” discussed the meaning of a college degree.

“A Trinity degree means that you don’t expect a crystal stair—a fairy tale path to an easy life,” said La Grand. “You know that God gave us freedom and gives us responsibility. You know that when the stairway is full of splinters and the way looks dark, you are not alone.”

Dr. John Hoekstra, associate professor of education in adult studies, gave the invocation; Robert Valentine, adult studies education graduate, led the litany reading; and Kelly Netjes ’02, director of alumni relations, welcomed the newest members.
