Trinity Alumnus Rudi Gesch Takes Timothy Soccer to State

TeamFormer elementary education major and soccer player Rudi Gesch ’04 graduated from Trinity and a lifetime of Christian education to take a position as a teacher and eventually varsity coach of the men’s soccer team at Timothy Christian High School.

This year Gesch’s team won the state championship—the first men’s team state championship in the school’s 99-year history.

“One of the things I like best about coaching, especially this year, is sharing what God has done,” said Coach Gesch. “Winning the championship clearly couldn’t have been done without Him.”

After placing second in state last year, the team lost 10 graduating seniors, so while there were “good feelings going into 2008,” according to Gesch, “there were lots of questions going into 2009.”

Those questions were answered dramatically on October 31:

In addition to the state championship, the team was awarded the Illinois High School Association’s “Do What’s Right” banner for exemplary sportsmanship.

“This was really the icing on the cake, because we were successful not only with final results, we also lived out our faith on the field in the process,” said Gesch.
Working alongside Gesch with the team was assistant coach Mike Oosterhouse ’04. These fellow Timothy coaches were also fellow Trinity students, roommates, and members of the men’s soccer team.

Gesch has served as a coach at Timothy for six seasons, three as varsity coach. He also moved from his position as a 5th grade teacher to that of marketing director at Timothy in 2006. He and his wife Stephanie live in Westchester, Illinois.
