the Season with Christmastide
Saturday, December 1, Trinity opened the doors of the Ozinga Chapel to
welcome parents, friends and the community to the College's first celebration
of Christmastide. The audience was greeted by a 15-foot poinsettia tree,
life-size nutcracker figures, and six-foot wreaths while the wind ensemble
played a medley of familiar Christmas carols. The program featured performances
by the College choirs, instrumental groups, and community choir members,
with guest harpist Renee Wilson. Dr. Helen Van Wyck conducted the concert
choir and honors ensemble in selections including French, English, Norwegian
and Spanish carols; June Miller led the campus choir in Norwegian, English
and African renderings; Matt Mantell conducted the string ensemble; and
Dr. Ken Austin directed the jazz band, brass and wind ensembles. The audience
participated in singing "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing," "O Come All Ye
Faithful," "Silent Night," and "Joy to the World." A highlight of the evening
was the performance by all music groups with the massed choir in singing
two choruses from Handel's Messiah: And the Glory of the Lord, and Hallelujah!
At the program's conclusion, the student choirs joined in singing "This
Christmastide (Jessye's Carol)," the signature piece of the event.
Next year, Christmastide will be held on two nights: Friday, December 6
and Saturday, December 7, 2002.
