MEN OPEN SEASON WITH A SPLIT

With a new coach on the sideline, the men's basketball team started its 2002-03 season on the winning track as hosts of the Mitchell Memorial Tournament during the first weekend of November.

Tim Walker's coaching debut was successful as Trinity topped East-West University 77-69 in the first round of the four-team tournament. The Trolls were unable to sustain their winning momentum overnight, falling 89-83 to Cornerstone University, the NAIA's top-ranked Div. II school, in the championship game.

"We played pretty well for the first games of the season," he said. "We've got a long way to go, but it feels good to get that first win. Although Cornerstone was banged up with a few injuries, it was encouraging to see us hang with the No. 1 team."

Senior forward Jonathan Van Steenis (Pella, Iowa) and senior guard Barrett Schrader (Plymouth, Indiana) were named to the all-tournament team after playing solid games both days.
