Read With Me: An Outreach to Children

Each week a group of Trinity students spends time with the children at Roseland Christian Ministries in Chicago reading books, playing games, making crafts, and having an impact on their lives. These students are part of Read With Me, a ministry under the Service Committee.

Sarah Roberts ’11 of Perkinsville, Vermont, and Kathy Hossink ’11 of Byron Center, Michigan, co-chair the outreach program.

“No matter how bad or stressful my day has been, none of that matters when I walk in the doors at Roseland,” said Roberts. “Seeing the kids’ joy puts the biggest smile on my face.”

Although Roberts feels that her involvement in Read With Me is a “God thing,” she knows the experience will benefit other areas of her life.

“In addition to knowing that it is God’s will, it will really help me in my field of choice,” explained Roberts, a social work major. “Helping the homeless and underprivileged children will be a part of my life for a long time.”

Currently Read With Me attracts around 15 Trinity students each week, but more students are encouraged to participate.
“We are hoping that as the year progresses more students will come,” said Roberts.  “It is a lot of fun and I know everyone would enjoy going. I don’t know what God has in store for us, but I know it’s going to be magnificent.”
