Trinity Names Lincoln Student Laureate
Cat Fillmore ’09 of Hollis, Maine, was named Trinity Christian College’s Lincoln Academy Student Laureate for 2009. Fillmore was chosen for her overall excellence in, and out of, the classroom.
Earlier this year, a committee of faculty and Student Development representatives met to consider top performing senior students worthy of this honor. From there a recommendation was made to President Timmermans, who made the final decision.
The student laureate award honors one student from each four-year institution in Illinois for overall excellence in academic and extracurricular activities. The Springfield-based Lincoln Academy not only honors Illinois' most accomplished students, but also honors distinguished citizens with the Order of Lincoln, the state's highest award. The Lincoln Academy Student Laureate is Trinity's highest individual honor.
“As Trinity's Lincoln Laureate for this year, I have been given the honor of officially opening OPUS,” said Fillmore. “I will also be speaking at Honors' Convocation the day before I graduate.”
In the classroom, she spends her time studying a wide array of subjects that support her special education major. However, it is her experiences with faculty and professors outside of the classroom that have been the most fulfilling.
“So many of my professors have taken a special interest in me or seen potential in me and I have found that very encouraging,” said Fillmore. “Hearing how much faith they have in my abilities really pushes me to work harder and become all the Lord wants me to be.”
After graduating, Fillmore is interested in attending graduate school to study language pathology. For the moment, she wants to keep her focus on what’s next.
“Right now I just want to look forward to enjoying student teaching in the Chicago Public School system next semester.”
Aside from receiving this great honor, Fillmore is also the Founders Scholar for her class, a part of the Ethnic Diversity Committee, and has participated in various service projects through Trinity’s Service Committee.
