Trinity Professor Selected for Art Commission

Art professor John Bakker has been commissioned by the City of Chicago's Office of Public Art (OPA) to do a large installation for a new building at 78th Street and Halsted.  The piece will be 7' tall and 110' long, and will require Bakker to work with churches and photos of parishioners in the 6th District of Chicago. The installation will also have civic implications as a reminder to police officers of their greater support community.

A few years ago, when Bakker brought a class to visit the Office of Public Art, alumna Hilary Reyenga '01, then a student, knew she wanted to do an internship there. Later she invited John to update the OPA's slides of his work to include the projects he had done for the Summer Faculty Scholarship program. The OPA liked his slides and his subsequent proposal to do the installation. Bakker resides in Beverly with his family.
