Evan VanderZee, a senior from South Holland, Ill., is the 2002-03 Lincoln Academy student laureate at Trinity Christian College. The Springfield-based Academy recognizes college seniors throughout the state for their excellence in academics and extra-curricular activities.

"I am truly honored that Trinity chose me," said VanderZee. "It will enhance my résumé and should help me get into a good graduate school."

VanderZee carries a 4.0 GPA while majoring in both mathematics and computer science. During his first three years at Trinity, he participated in international computer programming competitions as well as the Putnam exam, a mathematical contest that emphasizes well-written proofs. He also sings in the College's concert choir and honors ensemble, and plays in the brass quintet and jazz bands.

Academic achievement runs in the VanderZee family. Evan's sister Hanna, a 2000 Trinity graduate, garnered the award three years ago, which includes a medallion of Abraham Lincoln, a certificate of merit, and a stipend.

"It's neat that we both have won it," he said.

The Lincoln Academy of Illinois is a non-profit corporation that recognizes Illinois citizens for outstanding social, cultural, and technological contributions. The Student Laureate Program began in 1975 and pays tribute to seniors at more than 50 four-year colleges and universities.
