The Vermeers are Honored for Dedication to Trinity

On Friday, September 18, friends, family members, students, as well as past and present College leaders gathered for a dedication in the Fireside Room, which has been renamed the Harry and Bernice Vermeer Fireside Room in honor of the couple’s dedication to Christian higher education at Trinity Christian College.

Among the speakers for the evening were former president Dr. Ken Bootsma and Jeremy Klyn ’02, Trinity’s director of admissions and past recipient of a Vermeer scholarship, as well as Harry and Bernice’s son Mike Vermeer who gave thanks on behalf of the family. Trinity’s current President Dr. Steven Timmermans unveiled the new lettering above the entrance and presented Bernice with a plaque commemorating the event.

Harry, who passed away in 2006, served on Trinity’s Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1993 and was instrumental in promoting Trinity Christian College to area business people and to many future Trinity students.  Among the couple’s many contributions is an annual scholarship fund for students from the Pella, Iowa area that was established in 1986.  An added blessing to the evening was that the eight current scholarship recipients joined the festivities and personally thanked Bernice for her generosity.  The Vermeer family has also contributed generously over the years to Trinity’s annual fund and various building projects including the Jennie Huizenga Memorial Library and the Ozinga Chapel.
