Forty-two high school students experienced life at Trinity during the ACI College Readiness Program Summer Academy in July.

Trinity, a member of the Associated Colleges of Illinois, has hosted the summer academies since 2005. The academies offer a residential college experience to freshmen and sophomores attending the first week and juniors and seniors attending the second week.

Trinity is the only ACI member to award college credit to junior and senior high school students who successfully complete the session.

Academy mentors were trained as academic coaches by Dr. Steven Timmermans, president of the College, and provided instruction in college planning, test preparation, and study and writing skills.

Summer Academy mentors:
Trinity Residence Directors: Ellison Cooper and Carrie Rodgers ’02
Trinity alum/students: Jenna Hania ’07; Rich Tameling ’09 of Burr Ridge, Illinois; and Raven Thompson ’10 of Chicago.

“This week affirmed for some students that ‘yes’ they do want to attend college,” said Residence Director Carrie Rodgers. “Many of them really understood the importance of the experience we tried to create for them at Trinity.”

Classes offered during the week:
Service, Leadership and Christian Higher Education with Dr. Mary Lynn Colosimo, associate professor of psychology.
Personal Finance with Dr. Eun Ahn, associate professor of finance and economics.
Evening skill workshops with Dr. David Brodnax, assistant professor of history

The academy graduates of Trinity’s session were recognized at a ceremony and reception on Friday, July 27, in the Fireside Room. Some of the students shared the mission statements they had created during the week.

One student read, “Education is the key to success. No one can take away your knowledge.”
