RECENT GRAD WORKING WITH KURTIS PRODUCTION
Students participating in Trinity’s Chicago Semester have the unique opportunity to gain experiential learning through living and working in the city.
For Jordan Huenink ’07 that meant landing an internship with Kurtis Productions during his last semester. The production company, founded by acclaimed CBS news anchor and documentarian Bill Kurtis, has produced programs for the History Channel, the A&E Network and CNBC.
Huenink, a communication arts major, had already gained experience in documentary work during an Interim trip to Nicaragua in January 2007. There he worked with Emily Ward ’09 of Palos Heights, Illinois, and Jeff DeKock, program director of Trinity’s Semester in Nicaragua, on a documentary to promote the Nehemiah Center.
After joining Kurtis, Huenink began working on “Madness in the White City,” a historical documentary based on the best-selling book The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. The film follows the true story of serial killer H.H. Holmes and the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. It will air on the National Geographic Channel sometime this fall.
Huenink said he began to frantically search for a job as his internship ended and graduation day neared. Then in mid-May, Kurtis called and offered him a position as a freelance production assistant.
“It was such a blessing,” said Huenink, “I started back at Kurtis Productions the Monday after graduation.”
Since then he has continued to work on the same show, researching, archiving footage, assisting with shoots, and helping with casting, which is the reason Trinity Admissions Counselor Rick Trethewey ’07 serves as a body double for the notorious Holmes in the show.
Huenink credits Trinity’s professors and community with teaching him excellent interpersonal communication skills, which have been indispensable in his position at Kurtis.
“Dr. Annalee Ward and Dr. Craig Mattson of the Communication Arts department really do a great job preparing students for the real world,” said Huenink. “The community at Trinity also prepared me for the community I’m in now. I love the people at Kurtis, and enjoy working there.”
