BALSAN: 1921-2005 - 7/26/05
A familiar face will be missing
from the Molenhouse Student Center when the 2005-06 academic year begins.
Bernice Balsan, Trinity's longtime mailroom manager, died July 18 at Palos
Community Hospital. She was 83 years old.
Balsan collapsed while walking
in the parking lot after arriving on campus. She was rushed to the hospital
in critical condition and never recovered.
One of the longest-tenured
employees at Trinity, Balsan came to the College in 1973. After 19 years
in the business office, she became manager of the mailroom, where hundreds
of students, faculty, and staff saw her as they retrieved their mail, bought
stamps, and sent packages.
"Bernice always arrived at
work early, the mail was always done, and she rarely took a day off," said
Lois Thomson, the current business office manager who worked with Balsan
in that office. "She found joy in simple things like desserts, companionship,
and the arrival of packages for students from their homes. We will miss
her ready smile, her caring heart, and her unique personality."
