Program Connects Students with Opportunities
What began as a hunt for a summer job for college student Nick Huston has become experiential learning that will help prepare him for his future vocation.
As part of the AmeriCorps VISTA Program at Trinity, Huston, a student majoring in political science and pre-law at the University of Illinois-Chicago, is working on various projects for Trinity as a Summer VISTA Associate.
Through the Illinois Campus Compact, Trinity was selected in 2008 to have the three-year VISTA program, which provides funding for a position in the Office of Community Partnerships.
Huston’s main responsibility will be to partner with local non-profit organizations in providing volunteer opportunities for freshmen and transfer students in Trinity’s First Year Forum, as well as for participants in the Illinois Student Assistance Corps who are currently involved in mentor training on campus.
His goal in this role is to inform students and to “open their eyes to what is going on all around us.”
“I don’t want students to see volunteering as something they have to do but as something they can’t not do,” said Huston.
Another student hired through the VISTA program is Stephanie Anyaeche who is finishing her year-long position as the assistant to the Office of Community Partnerships and will be pursuing her master’s degree at DePaul University.
