FITZGERALD RECEIVES
RICH KOOY AWARD

Gene Fitzgerald was honored with the Rich Kooy Award at the annual athletics awards program on Saturday, May 4, 2002. The award was established to acknowledge individuals who have contributed significantly to the development of the athletics department at Trinity. The award was originally called the athletics department special award; it was renamed in 1993 as the Rich Kooy Award, in honor of mathematics professor Rich Kooy, a founding member of the Trinity Athletics Committee and a faculty athletics representative.

Fitzgerald, better known as simply "coach," was selected as this year's recipient because of his passion for Trinity Christian College, basketball, his students, and athletes during his ten years as physical education professor and men's basketball coach. Under his leadership, the team compiled a 158-179 record and advanced to the NCCAA National Tournament twice. Fitzgerald was also the intramurals director for many years. Fitzgerald is moving back to Lookout Mountain, Georgia, at the end of the semester to be closer to his family. The Trinity community will miss his smile, servant-like heart, and generosity.

Dave Ribbens, who received with the Rich Kooy Award last year, was given a tribute and presented with a gift for 22 years of dedication in the physical education department. Ribbens has accepted a position with Hallmark Sports Club in Frankfort, Illinois.

Also recognized that evening were:
Kara Bruxvoort '03 - Women's Award
Kevin Koeman '02 - Keith Albers Memorial Award
Justin Piper '02 - Tom Krygsheld Memorial Award
