Trinity Runners Race for Good Causes
When Trinity sophomore Alexandra Wyder of Prior Lake, Minnesota, was in the 7th grade, her father Mark was diagnosed with melanoma. On May 3, wearing a t-shirt with her father’s picture on the front, Wyder ran in the 2nd Annual Palos Bank Southwest Half Marathon to honor his memory.
Wyder’s father died from the disease last year. As a Charity Runner representing the American Cancer Society, Wyder said she ran to honor her father but also because “there has not been a lot of research on melanoma, and I wanted to raise as much money as I could for the cause.” Running with her was friend and fellow Trinity student Allison Doyle ’12 of New Lenox, Illinois. The two crossed the finish line, clasping hands in a show of support for each other.
Alumnus Jordan Huenink ’07 also ran in memory of someone--Kelly Grinkey ’09 of Geneva, Illinois. Grinkey, a friend and fellow Trinity classmate of Huenink’s, passed away from leukemia on April 21, just a month before she was to graduate. Grinkey’s sister, Amanda Learned ’09, joined Huenink for the last few miles of the race.
Proceeds from the 13-mile race also benefited the South West Special Recreation Association, Prostate Cancer Prevention, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. The race began and concluded in front of the Palos Heights city hall at Route 83 and 76th Avenue.
Several Trinity students, faculty, staff, and alumni were some of the nearly 1,100 marathon participants.
