A Springtime Celebration of Student Scholarship

The sound of bagpipes echoing throughout the campus signaled the start of OPUS 2008 on April 22. The 9th annual festival of academic achievement started in its usual manner with a parade through campus led by the Troll and an opening ceremony under the big tent.

Scores of afternoon sessions allowed time for students and faculty to learn what others have been working on all year. Presentations spanned the academic realm—from the arts to sciences, from education to theology. OPUS award-winning artwork, as well as the work in the Salon de Refusal, was on display in the library art gallery.

Awards were presented to winners in various categories. Departmental awards were also presented to winners.

During OPUS session breaks, there were performances by Sisters in Unity, Trinity’s Gospel Choir, and the Trinity Jazz Band. Physical education students hosted a bean bag tournament in the afternoon. After a picnic-style dinner, students gathered to win prizes such as gift baskets from the Women’s Guild and $250 tuition vouchers.

Academic Initiative helped sponsor the event. Chairperson Cassie VandeKamp ’10 of Manchester, Missouri, was pleased with the enthusiasm and participation of the students and rewarded by her organization’s involvement with the event.

“Academic Initiative’s sponsorship of OPUS is a lot of work, but I think it’s good for the students, good for the committee, and good for the event. We look forward to it again next year!”
