Van Namen Recital Hall Completed

The finishing elements of the Van Namen Recital Hall are now in place, including the Verkade tracker organ and the stained glass window depicting Creation. The north-facing window, designed by artist Paul Damkohler of Altamira Studio in Oak Park, Illinois, is the second of four windows that identify the major themes of the Reformed faith: Creation, the Fall, Redemption, and New Creation. With soft, pastel hues and abstract shapes, the design suggests the swirling mass of the cosmos interspersed with drops of water and other primal elements.

After spending a few years in a temporary home, the Verkade tracker organ is now installed in its permanent dwelling place. Hand-built of solid red oak by Gerrit Verkade of South Holland, Illinois, the 21-rank pipe organ consists of 16 stops, with mechanical key and draw stop action. Jacob and Rita Van Namen donated the organ to the College in memory of their son, Tony, and granddaughter Jacqueline Van Namen-Coakley '92.
