Education professor Patti Powell completed a milestone achievement in her professional career when she successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in curriculum and instruction at the University of Illinois-Chicago in February.

Powell, who has a master's degree in hearing impairments from the University of Arizona and a degree in music and elementary education from Calvin College, teaches special education courses at Trinity. She previously taught music for 14 years at Elim Christian School in Palos Heights, which serves children with special needs.

"One of my great loves has always been developing and implementing new programs," she said. "Throughout the years I designed many programs for the children and adults as well as the music program at Elim. It was an easy decision to follow this passion for developing curriculum and pursue a degree in curriculum and instruction."

With the addition of Powell, a Palos Heights resident who began teaching at the College in 1999, Trinity now has 41 professors with terminal degrees, which is nearly two-thirds of the total faculty.
