News Release

Certain people stand out in the life of Trinity Christian College and on February 2, the school honored four of them. Professor of Business John Kooyenga ’66 accepted the award for Alumnus of the Year. Kooyenga has taught at Trinity for more than 25 years.

He has been instrumental in placing many of Trinity’s business graduates in jobs throughout the Chicagoland area. Kooyenga has expanded his influence in recent years by teaching in the adult studies program as well as the traditional program. He and his wife, Audrey, have recently established a scholarship for business majors.

“I’ve had the honor of working with committed students, faculty, and staff,” Kooyenga said. “It’s been a remarkable journey and I’m honored to receive this award.”

Three people received Honorary Alumni Awards. Marty Ozinga III was recognized for his generous support of Trinity. He has served on the Trinity board of trustees. He and his wife Ruth, a former Trinity student, have been key supporters in major building developments. They help promote the College all over the world. Trinity honored them this year with the Global Service Award for their work with the Luke Society, an organization of Christian professionals dedicated to medical missions.

“The mission of the College will impact people all over the earth,” Ozinga said. “I’m honored to be a small part of it.”

Former Trinity president Dr. Ken Bootsma was credited with seeing the College through difficult financial times. He served as president from 1984-1996.

During his tenure, the College constructed two residence halls and the Jennie Huizenga Memorial Library.

I’m grateful for this opportunity once again to tell the wonderful story of Trinity Christian College,” he said.

And Professor of History Dr. Robert Rice was honored for selfless service and his impact on generations of students. He and his wife, Gail, served as resident directors in faculty apartments during some of the 28 years he spent on Trinity’s campus.

“This means a great deal,” Rice said. “The vision to renew our world and the friendships we make to accomplish that goal mean the most to me.”

Honorary Alumni Awards are given annually to one staff member, faculty member, and friend of the College. The idea emerged after several alumni recalled the positive influence of people who were not Trinity alumni. Nominees are chosen and approved by the alumni board, and must have made a significant contribution to the College.
