Jamaica Interim 2008

Jamaica Interim is a service-learning experience at the Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Sign language students have the opportunity to teach students with hearing impairments while Trinity professor Patti Powell works with the CCCD teachers.

Hello to all of our family and friends, many of whom are back in the cold and snowy Midwest.

The Jamaica Interim 2008 team had a smooth and trouble free trip to beautiful Montego Bay early Saturday morning. We arrived on time at 11:30 a.m. to sunny skies and 80 degree temperatures…and very happy. After a quick lunch at Burger King we took our yearly group photo in front of Montego Bay’s Margaritaville and then drove up to the Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf. It has been raining on the island since September, so the roads were quite a mess but our fearless driver, Ms. Russell, got us safely to our destination, and we were ready to begin our adventure.

We immediately unpacked and then headed back into town to peruse the Mo Bay straw market and fill out a questionnaire for one of our team members, Kirstie Sherman. Kirstie, a senior business major, is working on developing a viable store on the school’s campus where other work teams can shop, and this was the first step in her project—finding out just what work teams might want to purchase. We hope to begin to implement her findings this week as we suggest ways to build and stock a campus store.
Since we had about an hour to kill before dinner, we made our way to Doctor’s Cave Beach and had a relaxing time swimming in the blue Caribbean and watching the sun go down. Back at campus we organized our materials for the coming week of teaching, had dinner, and then received the devastating news that one of the students from CCCD had died within the past hour.  Sheneque had been hospitalized the previous Saturday with an unknown illness and had gotten steadily worse over the week. Please pray for the staff and students as they grieve the loss of this vibrant young woman. We ended our day in a time of devotions and prayer for our work this week, for the children and staff of CCCD, and for the island of Jamaica.

Tomorrow we will begin our day worshiping at the Meeting Place in Montego Bay and will then fill our day with preparations for teaching and getting to know each other better. Following, you will find our group photo. Notice the smiling faces, sunny skies, and deep blue water—all wonderful things in January! Check back again as I will update our site as often as possible.

In His Service, Dr. Patti Powell
