THE FACES OF POVERTY
On Thursday, February 8, the social work department will be hosting an event titled “Faces of Poverty: A Discussion with Diane Doherty and Ed Shurna.” Doherty is executive director of the Illinois Hunger Coalition. Shurna is executive director of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.
“The discussion will address the many faces of poverty in Chicago and Illinois,” said Dr. Mackenzi Huyser, associate professor of social work. “The speakers will address new and continuing trends in poverty, what policies and programs are available, and current issues impacting individuals and families who are living in poverty.”
The hope is that the forum will provide a learning opportunity for both students and community members about poverty’s impact on individuals and families.
“Perhaps it will inspire students and community members to work in their communities to end poverty,” Huyser said. “Outside of the discussion, I hope students and community members are able to network and together seek ways to better their communities.”
“Faces of Poverty” will take place on February 8, from 6-8 p.m. in the Van Namen Recital Hall. RSVP to Laura Zumdahl at email@example.com or by phone at 708.239.4852.
