SPANISH PROGRAM STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the program, Spanish Majors will be able to do the following:
- Use Spanish speaking and listening skills to interact correctly and appropriately with native Spanish speakers in a variety of settings, up to the advanced level of ACTFL’s Oral Proficiency Guidelines
- Write Spanish accurately, for a variety of situations and applications, up to the advanced level of ACTFL’s Written Proficiency Guidelines
- Articulate an understanding of the manners, customs, and cultural expressions of various Spanish-speaking societies
- Evaluate the expressive forms of culture such as music, dance, folk art, drama, and architecture, represented by various societies in the Hispanic World
- Interpret representative forms of Hispanic literature and media
- Demonstrate an awareness of the history, geography, social institutions, and contemporary events of various Hispanic cultures
- Use Spanish to reinforce and further the knowledge of other disciplines
- Analyze and evaluate from a Christian perspective the worldviews expressed in Hispanic culture, both Christian and secular
In addition to demonstrating proficiency as indicated above, the Spanish Education Major will be able to do the following:
- Articulate the processes involved in acquiring Spanish.
- Explain in Spanish the structure of Spanish in a manner understandable to a variety of learners.
- Use Spanish to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a variety of career options.
Throughout the year assessment data is gathered through senior and alumni surveys, standardized exams, capstone essays, oral interviews, Semester in Spain and field education assessments, and State of Illinois Certification Exam to determine how well the program is meeting its student learning outcomes.
