Alex
DeJong '68
Blessed To Be A Blessing
The year was 1968 and the
U.S. was embroiled in the Viet Nam war when Alex DeJong completed his first
two years of college at Trinity. His father, Rev. Alex C. DeJong, was president
of the College during one of the nation's most turbulent times in its history.
For young Alex, the decision to attend medical school after graduation
came at a crucial time in his life, and he believed that this indeed was
the calling for which he had been prepared during his studies at Trinity.
Later, as a family practice
physician, he was "privileged" to take care of two Trinity professors who
had profoundly influenced him, Drs. Ed Vander Weele and Maarten Vrieze.
"It was an opportunity to give something back, to acknowledge the importance
of my Trinity years and the solid grounding I received in developing a
Reformed worldview," says DeJong.
DeJong's appreciation for
Trinity's role in this formative period of his life has been evident in
his involvement with the College over the past thirty years. He has served
on the board of trustees, was named Alumnus of the Year, and saw his oldest
son, Chad, graduate from Trinity in 1998. "As Trinity has been a
blessing to so many, now the College is being blessed in many ways-students,
facilities, programs, and spiritual vitality. The College is truly growing
in Christ, and has become a place where spiritual growth is cultivated."
